The name comes from the "cloot" or cloth used in preparing this treat. Made with sultanas, raisins, citrus peel, treacle, marmalade and spices, this is a festive and flavorful favorite. We liked it - but it is very much for English taste buds - meaning very sweet. It needs whipped cream to make it a bit less dense. Much better than other English puddings that I have had.

As a kid my grandmother would make what she called suet pudding - a steamed cake with raisins. While this was made with something called vegetable suet, and had a few more dried fruits, it was a good easy substitute for Grandma's. Very tasty. My only disappointment was that it was pictured with a sauce, which was not included. So I made my grandma's hard sauce to go with it and it was outstanding!!
