This sweet and rich pudding is a staple of traditional Hogmanay and Burns Night gatherings. Great for birthday celebrations, too! The name comes from the "cloot" or cloth used in preparing this treat. Made with sultanas, raisins, citrus peel, treacle, marmalade and spices, this is a festive and flavorful favorite. Fans of "The Great British Bake Off" may have taken an interest in clootie dumplings when they saw the contestant bakers attempt to perfect the tricky pastry. We liked it - but it is very much for English taste buds - meaning very sweet. It needs whipped cream to make it a bit less dense. Much better than other English puddings that I have had.

As a kid my grandmother would make what she called suet pudding - a steamed cake with raisins. While this was made with something called vegetable suet, and had a few more dried fruits, it was a good easy substitute for Grandma's. Very tasty. My only disappointment was that it was pictured with a sauce, which was not included. So I made my grandma's hard sauce to go with it and it was outstanding!!
