This fun book is modeled on those classic nursery rhymes and stories that involve a piling-on of details, like The Twelve Days of Christmas, or There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea, or There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly -- they're called "cumulative songs." In this case, as the title suggests, Granny comes back from Scotland with an ever-growing pile of lovely gifts for her grandchildren and their parents. The book serves as a kind of memory game for youngsters, who can test their recall skills to recite all of the Scottish goodies that Granny brought back. What starts out as a predictable enough list -- shortbread, and tartan, etc -- soon turns into a comical stream of excess generosity (and logistical challenges!). By book's end there are caber-tossers, pipers, highland cows, and some famous Scottish mythical creatures scampering around the living room! The pressure's on any vacationers heading to Scotland to come back with a spread of gifts half as impressive! 22 page illustrated paperback. By Mike Nicholson and Patrick Corrigan.
