Wooden Spurtle

There are new spurtle shapes being sold on television and online, some flat like a spatula, some slotted like a spoon, but these are not the Scottish Style Spurtle. An ancient stirring stick designed to keep porridge (what we call oatmeal) from sticking to the sides and edges of the pot. There is even a Golden Spurtle Award in Scotland - for the best tasting porridge. Our spurtle is made of beechwood in Poland, 12 inches long and ties with a tartan ribbon.

We were in Scotland a few years ago when we were introduced to this simple cooking tool. It is great for stirring anything thick or sticky (ie porridge or peanut brittle). The advantage over using a spoon is that you don't get the buildup in the bowl of the spoon. These spurtles are much more reasonable in price than what we bought in Scotland. I bought these to give as gifts.
